Austin Halsey
I am a senior at Wesleyan University studying mathematics and music. Following graduation, I will be working in biostatistics and hope to further explore the intersection of quantitative big data and public health research. My interests include statistical regression analysis and the application of data-driven research to improve outcomes for individuals and communities.
Abstract: Substance Use disorder (SUD) remains a critical and expanding public health issue in the United States, characterized by a widening gap between treatment need and treatment followthrough. Recent national estimates indicate that while the proportion of adults meeting the criteria for SUD treatment has increased substantially over the past decade, treatment utilization has declined. Prior research identifies insurance coverage and socioeconomic position as key determinants of access to care, yet unmet need for treatment persists even among insured populations, suggesting the presence of additional structural and financial barriers.
