I am a sophomore from Juneau, Alaska. I am currently pursuing a double-major in Education Studies and History with the goal of becoming an elementary school teacher in the future.
Abstract: This project focuses on the relationship between education as an occupation and confidence in the U.S. courts and judicial system. I built on previous knowledge of the School-to-Prison Pipeline (STPP) to hypothesize that those who work in the education industry have lower confidence in the court system than those who do not, due to their daily interactions with students who may be victims of this pipeline. I found that those within the education industry had significantly higher confidence in the courts than those who work within the trade industry. However, this relationship was confounded by degree attainment, with those with Graduate degrees significantly more confident in the courts than those without a high school diploma. Notably, factoring in the third variable of race revealed that black respondents had significantly lower confidence in the courts than white respondents. These findings help explain how community realities and educational success inform individuals’ confidence in the courts.
