Abstract: This study looks at the relationship between sleep duration and mental health outcomes among U.S. high school students. The data come from the Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey (ABES), a nationally representative CDC survey. The sample consists of 7,705 students in grades 9-12. Mental health was measured by how often students reported feeling stressed, anxious, or depressed in the past 30 days. Sleep was measured as the average number of hours of sleep on a school night. Additional behaviors examined as covariates include screen time, physical activity, and breakfast consumption. Statistical analyses confirmed a significant association between sleep duration and mental health outcomes. Students who slept less reported worse mental health outcomes, while those who slept more reported better overall well-being. These findings suggest that sleep is an important factor in students’ overall mental health.
