Abstract: The association between between household income and alcohol consumption and that between familial proximity to military service and alcohol consumption have been extensively studied and are both positive. However, the relationship between income and drinking in relatives of US service members has not been studied. Because income does not represent the true extent of benefits and exemptions given to active service members (nor does the civilian income:drinking relationship factor in the correlation between trauma and alcohol consumption) the observed relationship between income and alcohol consumption may differ when the sample is constrained to relatives of US service members. The present study examines offspring of US service members and the relationship between their binge drinking frequency and their annual household income. Binge drinking was chosen because its relationship to income with regard to the chosen population has not been previously, in addition to the fact that it is significantly associated to alcohol related death, illness and injury.
